Sprious’ new Data Analyst introduces himself in his own words
I believe that, “You don’t choose a career from the beginning, but eventually grow into one.” Let me tell you about how I transitioned into the world of data and you’ll see what I mean when I say my career has been a wicked game of Snakes and Ladders.
Being brought up in Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of India, technology had a huge impact on me growing up. I remember the first time my dad got me a computer, and I sat behind the gleaming monitor playing a mere 2d game. Believe it or not, what intrigued me most was how things worked inside the computer, rather than on the screen. This is what ignited the spark that led me to take up electronics and communication in my pre-university where I learned the 0’s and 1’s of computers. This was the first roll of the dice.
Merely knowing how the registers and processors work was not enough for me, and as a result, I stepped into my undergraduate studies with computer science and engineering as my major. During the four years of pure software development oriented courses, I realized that from virtual personal assistants to self driving cars, we live in a world where exabytes of data are generated every day. It became quite clear that a career in data was the way to move forward for me.
So, filled with passion and dreams, I packed my bags and flew to the United States. In Snakes and Ladders, this would be considered a “big roll” and it allowed me to climb a ladder towards my master’s degree in business analytics at the University of Texas at Dallas. It was during these two years of my master’s program that I fell in love with data and realized two things: that good, convertible data is worth millions in the current age, and that having the knowledge to find it, process it, and present it plays a vital role in any organization.
When I was graduating and just about to cross the finish line, I was brought down by a big snake right at the end: the global pandemic. At a time when everyone was advising me to get any job that I could get my hands on, I stayed true to my goals and I kept rolling, kept pushing, kept looking for the right fit. And hey, moving from electronics and communication, to computer science and engineering, and finally to business analytics, here I am at Sprious as a data analyst.
Being a data analyst at Sprious, I find exploring and analyzing untapped data to be a critical role in the prospective decision making of our company. I have come to realize every sector requires harnessing data to draw actionable insights in each aspect of their operations. At Sprious, I’ve been given the unique opportunity to learn and branch out into domains that I didn’t know existed. (Don’t be fooled by the job titles of anyone at Sprious; we are more than what our job title tells you we are!) I can now confidently say that I fit into the saying: “Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life”.
As we come to the end of this blog, I’ve come to realize that the game is far from over. I’m going to continue my search for the next big ladder and prepare myself to dodge any snakes that prevent me from crossing the finish line!!
