A Tribute to Sprious’ Beginnings

We write to you today with some sad news. Last week, Ben and I’s dad passed away due to a heart attack. You can read the full obituary here. We wanted to take a moment to honor our dad in the context of Sprious…

As I was digging through old photo albums, I came across some very inspiring text (click image to see more):

“[Emeigh] had worked at a Wilber grocery, and had expressed interest in operating his own business.”

The age of our dad at this time? 23, eerily close to when I started Sprious!

He went on to be self-employed for most of the rest of his life in a completely separate field:  a contractor. He was able to build a house end-to-end with his bare hands – no subcontracting, no books, no internet… and believe it or not, no ChatGPT 🙂

It’s funny how business, no matter the industry and no matter the era, never seems to change. “Keep It Simple Stupid” – something we should always keep in mind at Sprious:

On our team trip to Cancun many moons ago, our dad joined along. We made a special presentation to honor him for the values he instilled in us for making Sprious what it is today:

  • Hard work ethic – there was never a doubt about my dad’s work ethic. He was one that never complained, always took accountability for his own doings, and ‘did what he said he would do’.
  • A master of his craft – he could build anything an architect put on the blue piece of paper. He knew how to do his work well, and he went into deep focus mode every day that he showed up to work.
  • Customer care – he truly embodied “treat the customer as you would want to be treated”. There are many memories where he’d be at home fretting about making a mistake, or being delayed on a project, or generally causing the customer a dissatisfaction. I can only hope Sprious continues to carry this forward as we seek to give our customers the best experience possible.

I could go on and on, but the thing our dad gifted us with most is the inspiration and encouragement to build Sprious. We’re here today because of those seeds planted early, and we will continue to honor these values as we go forward. A Sprious member was lost today, but he will forever be in our DNA.
